My DAW isn't showing the plugin after installing

Why doesn't my DAW see a VST3 plugin I just installed?

Almost always because the host built its plugin list before the file existed. DAWs read the VST3 folder at startup or on demand, so quit the DAW completely, reopen it, and trigger a rescan. If it is still missing, the file is in a folder the DAW is not watching.

Check these in order

  1. 1Quit the DAW entirely — closing the project window is not enough.
  2. 2Confirm the .vst3 file exists in the system VST3 folder for your platform.
  3. 3Reopen the DAW and run its plugin rescan or refresh.
  4. 4Clear the plugin blocklist or failed-scan cache if the host keeps one.
  5. 5Reinstall with the DAW closed, approving any operating-system security prompt.

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
  • macOS (all users): /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3
  • macOS (current user): ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3

If it appears but won't load

A plugin that shows in the list and then fails to open is usually blocked at the operating-system level rather than broken. On macOS that means an unapproved first run; on Windows it is occasionally an antivirus quarantine of a freshly downloaded binary.
