How to Evaluate a VST Plugin in a Free Trial (Without Wasting the 14 Days)

A plugin trial isn't a demo of features, it's a test of whether the plugin survives contact with your actual work. That means you have to use it on a real project with a real deadline, not on a blank session on a Sunday.

Day 1 — the install test

• Does it install to the standard VST3 folder without extra services?
• Does your host find it on first scan?
• Does it open at your normal buffer size with a full session already loaded?

If any of those three is a fight, note it. Friction on day one becomes friction forever.

Days 2–5 — one real project, no presets

Use it on a paying or personal project you actually care about. Skip the preset browser for the first session; find out whether the defaults are sensible, because defaults are where you'll live when you're rushed.

Days 6–10 — the recall test

Close the project. Open it two days later. Is everything exactly as you left it — settings, window size, content? Session recall is the difference between a tool and a toy, and it's the thing most trials never test.

Days 11–14 — the removal test

Deliberately work one session without it. If nothing feels missing, you have your answer and you saved money. If you keep reaching for it, buy it.

The three questions that predict long-term use

• Does it remove a repeated step, or add a new one?
• Would a collaborator notice the result, or only you?
• Can you explain in one sentence what it does better than what you already own?

Worked example: a workflow plugin

Say you're trialling a lyrics teleprompter such as LyricsRunnerVST. The measurable test isn't "do I like the fonts". It's: count the transport stops caused by lyric problems in a session without it, then count them in a comparable session with it. If that number drops, the tool paid for itself in studio time and singer patience. Fourteen days and no credit card is more than enough to run that experiment twice.

And if the trial ends undecided

Undecided means no. A tool you're unsure about after two weeks of real use is a tool you won't reach for under pressure. Uninstall it cleanly and spend the money on something you already know you're missing.
